The EVO 4G LTE isn’t the HTC One X ? it might be better

evo one x 7 The EVO 4G LTE isnt the HTC One X ? it might be better

"But I wanted the HTC One X!"

So we've noticed. But here's the deal, Sprint fans. You're getting the EVO 4G LTE. The Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE. And you know what? It might actually be better than the One X.

Crazy talk, I know. But think about it. No, wait. First, go back and read our HTC One X review. Now let's think about it. How much of the EVO 4G LTE (or the E4GLTE for not-so short) is exactly in line — on paper, anyway — with the One X? Quite a bit. And, more important, it's in line with features of the One X about which we're still shouting from the rooftops.

And it doesn't stop there. Consider:

  • Both have a 4.7-inch Super LCD2 display. It's gorgeous.
  • Both have 720×1280 resolution. Beat that.
  • Both have the Qualcomm S4 processor at 1.5 GHz. (Which, by the way, really isn't "slower" than the Tegra 3 variant because it has half the cores.)
  • Both have HTC's excellent new camera and app.
  • Both have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
  • Both have Sense 4.
  • Both have Beats Audio.
  • Both get you 25-gigabytes of online storage from Dropbox free for two years.

But, no. It's still not the One X.

Wahoo Fitness BlueSC cycling sensor preview

dsc01424 1333576913 Wahoo Fitness BlueSC cycling sensor preview

It wasn’t all that long ago that Wahoo Fitness unveiled it’s iPhone 4S friendly BlueHR heart monitor to let you track your workouts. Well, it turns out that Wahoo’s been working on something new, and at a Bluetooth 4.0 event today in SF, we got a sneak peek at the company’s next device, the BlueSC. It’s a gadget aimed at would-be Alberto Contadors that wirelessly tracks the speed and pedaling cadence of cyclists via Wahoo’s existing app. It’s a three piece affair with a main hub that straps to your bike frame, one magnet that goes on your wheel, and a second that’s placed on the pedal crank. The hub gets rotational info from each magnet as it swings past and then shoots your stats to your phone via Bluetooth, allowing you to track your performance as you chug up the Alpe d’Huez. (OK, maybe just around the neighborhood.) What you see above is a working prototype device, but Wahoo’s being coy about further hardware details, pricing and availability — though we can say that it’s quite lightweight and can’t weigh more than few grams. In the meantime, you can get a better look at your next training tool in the gallery below.

VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

vmware mozy VMware adds Mozy to its cloud and virtualization empire

Mozy is one of the most popular cloud backup services around, with more than one million users storing around 70 petabytes of data. Its popularity apparently put it on the acquisition radar of VMware — which has now made Mozy part of its virtualization empire.

VMware’s official blog post makes it clear that the company wasn’t so much interested in Mozy as a consumer offering. Rather, it’s the inner workings of Mozy which piqued VMware’s curiosity. CTO Steve Herrod says, “Over the past 5 years, Mozy has built one of the best examples of a globally distributed, large-scale cloud offering.” He adds that the move will allow VMware to “further ramp our own cloud-related learning and accelerate new IP, scale, and capabilities” of its existing offerings.

Existing Mozy customers don’t need to worry, of course. VMware has pledged to continue running Mozy’s service without interruption.

Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality

skype 5.3 Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends’ presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.

Ears-on with HD Voice on the Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

sprintdsc09810 Ears on with HD Voice on the Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

So this definitely isn’t your ordinary hands-on — there’s really no way to accurately capture audio coming through the earpiece in a mobile phone — so, well, we’ll just have to use our words. Sprint’s just-announced HTC EVO 4G LTE is the first device to feature what the carrier has coined “HD Voice.” The smartphone uses dual microphones, along with encoders and decoders to capture and transmit your voice from one equipped device to another — that’s right, for now, you and another caller will both need to be using this specific handset, paired with compatible network access points, which Sprint will begin rolling out shortly as part of its “Network Vision.” We know what you’re thinking: I don’t use my phone as a phone. Sprint claims otherwise, however, saying that the network will handle 500 billion voice minutes this year alone. If you happen to account for any of those calls, there’s certainly no harm in sharing your spoken word in ‘HD.’

We hopped into a steamy sound booth at Sprint’s NYC launch event today, speaking to an employee using HD Voice on the LTE EVO. The difference was clear, especially once he turned up the “background noise” on a demo music track, which we couldn’t hear at all until the handset was moved within an inch or two of the speaker — we can only imagine how this will play out on the audibly cluttered streets of New York City, which are definitely suited more for text than voice. The HD Voice experience was the same without any background noise at all, and just as impressive. You’ll of course still be susceptible to ambient noise on the listening end — after all, we needed to be in a near-silent booth to block out the sound around. Stay tuned for more detailed impressions in our full review closer to the device’s May 7th pre-order date — we patiently await an opportunity to listen more closely.

Color vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhere

nguyen Color vulnerable to simple GPS hack, lets you spy on anyone, anywhereColor, the $41-million-in-funding location-oriented photo sharing startup, is susceptible to simple GPS spoofing. With nothing more than a jailbroken iPad or iPhone, you can use FakeLocation to trick Color into thinking you’re somewhere else. Within seconds you can be browsing photos that were snapped thousands of miles away. With a little digging, you can pore through photos not intended for your eyes.

Of course, such a hack isn’t illegal as such — every photo you take with Color is public. With FakeLocation you are simply circumventing Color’s very limited location-oriented security mechanism. It does undermine Color’s usefulness (and uniqueness), though — if nefarious types can sit in their bedroom or basement and eavesdrop on classy dinner parties and wild night club soirees, people might be less inclined to share personal photos with those around them.

Fortunately, both for Color and its users, this is an easy security hole to plug — at least in the short term. The app (or server-side) code simply checks to see if the user has ‘teleported’ an impossibly large distance, without any intermediate steps in between. In the long term, though, Color’s users must be aware that its social graph is completely public. Color’s users must realize that every photo they upload is visible by anyone, from any place.

After the break, just to elucidate a little on Color’s actual business model and ultimate intention, we have two amazing quotes from Bill Nguyen, Color’s founder.

Ice Cream Sandwich for the AT&T Galaxy Note leaked

note ics Ice Cream Sandwich for the AT&T Galaxy Note leaked note ics2 Ice Cream Sandwich for the AT&T Galaxy Note leaked

The folks over at RootzWiki got their hands on a leaked build of Ice Cream Sandwich for the AT&T Galaxy Note (I717). First reports are pretty good, with the few bugs easy to work around. RootzWiki notes the list of features as:

  • Face Unlock is fully functional
  • LTE connections are solid and up to speed
  • Phone calls work great both ways
  • Audio quality is up to par
  • Stereo Bluetooth is fully functional
  • MMS is fully functional
  • GPS is fully functional
  • Google Talk and Video Chat work
  • Google Voice is fully functional
  • Task Manager is smooth and transitions are quick
  • Downloaded Flash video and in-browser video works flawlessly
  • Chrome autosync is fully functional
  • AT&T Hotspot functionality works, external devices connect fine

It's the same sort of leak we saw recently for the Skyrocket, which means it's a Windows only affair until someone get's a flashable version out of it. It also hits your flash counter, so be aware of warranty issues if you give it a try.

With the unexpected popularity of the Galaxy Note, we're pretty certain a version for folks who would rather flash things from recovery. We have no idea when the official version will be ready for release, so if you are itching for ICS this may be your only chance for a while. Grab it, and follow the directions closely, from the source link.
